The Meagher County Attorney is an elected position of 4 years and is a half-time position because of the small population of Meagher County. By law, the County Attorney is the top law enforcement official for Meagher County and acts as the legal adviser to the Board of County Commissioners, all elected officials of Meagher County, Fire Districts, Weed Districts and School Districts.
The County Attorney is the Public Prosecutor and prosecutes all felonies in Meagher County, as well as other misdemeanor crimes which occur in the county and outside the City jurisdictions. The County Attorney's office works with all law enforcement agencies in Meagher County including the Meagher County Sheriff’s Department, Montana Highway Patrol, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, Animal Control, as well as other State investigative agencies in the prosecution of crimes against the State of Montana. The County Attorney provides services to DPHHS in the protection of abused children. She provides services relative to guardianships or conservatorships for indigent individuals.
The County Attorney does not provide legal advice to the general public; however, Montana allows half time county attorneys to maintain a private practice. Kimberly is a partner at Deschene & Swandal PC, which has its main office in White Sulphur Springs.
Kimberly Deschene was elected to office beginning January 1, 2011. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies and a Master’s degree in Public Administration from The University of Montana. She graduated from The University of Montana School of Law in May 2007 and has spent time working as a public defender. She is particularly interested in the legal issues surrounding child abuse and neglect cases.
